Live long and marry (updated)

There’s an auction going on over in the wonderful world of LJ to raise money

for the fight against the California initiative which will legally destroy existing same-sex marriages and ban any further ones. If the initiative passes, it will write discrimination into the state constitution, annull existing marriages, and make Mr. Sulu cry.

You can find more information about the auction here. There are some amazing items being offered for auction, not just jewellery and other objects but services. Writers offering to write a story for you, or to critique your own writing. Trust me that is a very big offer.

Sadly, I don’t have time to offer anything like that. Or I could offer but it wouldn’t happen till 2042 or something.1 But I would like to support the cause because I believe in LOVE! George Takei and Brad Altman finally being allowed to get married after being together for more than twenty years? Well, it made me very teary indeed. And I’m not even a Star Trek fan.

My offer: I will name a character (or something) after you in my next novel.

You can go bid on it here.

Update: I forgot to say that bidding ends on 15 July (USA time).

  1. Plus I suck at short stories. []

I wish you both had money too!

Sherwood: Well, it was the only thing I could think of that didn’t involve actual work, you know?

It breaks my heart that a potential ban of gay marriages is even an option!
I went to gay pride this weekend here in San Francisco,
    And, oh, THE LOVE!
So many brand new marriages after years and years of being together.
    Well, it’s just wonderful.

‘love, love, love. All you need is love”

Reading this, and watching “bringing baby home” on TLC has made me quite sappy… Thanks a lot Justine!!!

This one is gonna go high, I bet. Kinda takes it out of the “fanfic/internet” realm too, that’s great 🙂

Wow. I was lucky enough to be in the first audience anywhere (at least that’s what they told us!) to see the new film MILK, about the life of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the US. Reading about this new initiative gave me chills — it would undo the excllent work that Mr. Milk did to fight legalized discriminataion against gays. It shouldn’t have taken a movie to educate me about his work, but it did — and I hope the movie will enlighten others when it comes out this fall.

I would love to have a character named after me. I just don’t have the ,money. Well not for that at least, as much as I wish I did. Characters with the same name as me in books are usually extremely minor, or disliked by the protagonist.

I think this is a wonderful thing for you to do. Thanks for posting the link. I’ve bid on a few things and I’m thinking of offering something for bid, like to critique a fanfic, write a fanfic, fill up a journal with quotes, or something like that.

I think it’s absurd that people are still trying to stop this from happening. It’s just pathetic. I, myself, am straight but I know people who are gay and flew from the East Coast to Cali to get married. People should just get over it. They’re not hurting anyone by getting married but the people trying to ban it are hurting so many.

    Anyway, I love your idea!
