What Are You Watching?

Yesterday I listed some of my favourite recent US TV shows. It got me wondering what your favourite shows are and why? Because I’m just about to finish the first season of Legend of Korra and will have to find something else to watch that’s every bit as wonderful.

I only noticed that I watch completely different kinds of TV in Australia than I do in the US. Here in Australia I watch lots of non-fiction: Australian Story, Four Corners, pretty much all the cooking shows, lots of sport, Rockwiz. Stuff like that. My US shows as listed yesterday are mostly fiction, genius shows like The Wire and Deadwood.

So what are you watching wherever in the world you are? Yes, anime counts. Please to tell me!

Let’s see, I’m watching entirely too much anime right now (a lot of new shows just started airing so I’m still trying to sort out what’s good and whats not) and I’m also watching the American tv show Veronica Mars right now. Still in the first season but I have a total girl crush on Veronica and the show is turning out to be much more smartly written than I would’ve guessed.

Favorite TV? Easy: Doctor Who, Phineas and Ferb (the only thing on Disney that’s actually worth watching), and The Food Network (especially shows like Chopped and Next Food Network Star). If I were to recommend one of those, it would be hands-down Doctor Who. No question. 🙂

Do you watch Awkward on MTV? It’s my favorite summer show. So funny. It tides me over while I’m waiting for Community and Vampire Diaries to start back up.

Apart from Korra – The Good Wife (regrettably on hiatus for the summer – amazing sense of the absurd) and Project Runway (the new season’s just started).

Leverage. The first four seasons are out on DVD. The executive producer, John Rogers, has a degree in physics. He’s also a stand up comic. Absolutely brilliant. The DVD commentaries will teach you about shooting TV as well as writing. They assume the audience is intelligent. The first two seasons you get a long character arc of the main character. It’s so well written. If you like the movie, “Ocean’s 11” and you like con-men and crime, funny with very low body count, this is the one for you.

Leverage is my favorite currently-airing TV show. If you are reading this comment, then you should watch the series. It’s smart, it’s funny, it truly has something for everyone – comedy, drama, action, justice, romance – with a diverse and immensely talented cast. Sundays at 8 PM PST/EST 7 Central on TNT, people. Give it a go.

    I also enjoy Fringe.

Hmm, since it doesn’t seem like many other people have replied, I shall also toss in a recommendation for a really odd currently airing anime, Humanity Has Declined. I know it’s streaming legally for the US on crunchyroll.com, not sure about Australia, but the basic premise is social commentary (set in a far future where humanity has started, well, declining) with lots of sarcasm, dead-pan, and black comedy. Not so sure if you’d enjoy it, I wasn’t sure if I did until I got a few episodes in, but since barely anyone has recommended anime here I feel like I should suggest at least one thing. ^^

I just finished My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and now I’m off to see the second season of Game of Thrones (how’s that for disparity..)

I really recommend Misfits if you haven’t seen it yet, as well as the anime Revolutionary Girl Utena.

I don’t have cable or satellite service of any kind, so I don’t really watch TV per se, unless you count online streaming through Netflix–which makes it kind of hard to keep up on current episodes of shows, since Netflix doesn’t usually make them available for online viewing until they’ve been out about a year. On the other hand, the lack of obnoxious commercials and exorbitant fees makes up for it. Right now, though, I’d have to say my favorite shows are:
    The Big Bang Theory
    Bones
    Burn Notice
Scrubs (yeah, I know it’s been over for years, but it’s still one of my all-time favorite shows)
    Doctor Who
    Fringe
    Eureka
