That is the absolutely excellent and ultimately hugely moving Haibane Renmei, which everyone else has already told you, but which I had to throw in a comment for. It’s not what you were asking for when you were asking for anime, and the art is very much in muted colors, but … it’s 13 episodes of quiet, ultimately hopeful and subtly beautiful story.
