There is a way to convert your second attempt into a more desirable shape - move the flat forward face of the tie at the knot little lower (this needs a little twiddling) and tighten. Keep doing this till you get either a tight triangle, or an unfortunate rectangle in which case you would need to restart from the beginning. Getting the triangle needs tightening in a specific manner that I never got the hang of, but I think the person in the video you had shown actually illustrates that part...

P.S. Hi! I found your blog while browsing randomly, and found it very interesting; am now trying to find your books :)

Nice work! If one of your goals is to be able to help others when needed, perhaps you should also practice on another person, or a mannequin?

Nice tie with a very nice-colored shirt. I do not know how to tie a tie, and despite any attempts I have made to learn, I haven't managed it yet. More power to you.

Wow! Those are amazing! I wish I could do that! Maybe I should try some time!!
This is off topic - but I had to read a 'classic' novel for school and chose to read 'A Room Without a View' by E.M Forster - I was wondering what your favorite classic novel is?
