Don't writers and editors ever discuss the writer's MS? What changes
are needed, why certain sections work/don't work, and so forth?

Or is everything done by email nowadays? No face to face editor/writer
interaction except to eat, drink, and gossip?

After my first lunch with an editor I settled on the best description of the experience as: "We drank books and talked bubbly."

Don't you love it when you go in expecting one thing, and mainly you're expecting it to go really really bad, you've imagined everything that could go horribly wrong, but then it turns out to be a complete BLAST! I love it when that happens.

I think the same nervousness that you and or your friend have about meeting an editor, are about the same when a fan gets to meet their favorite author.

When I first met Holly and Cassie a year ago, and then you and Scott a couple months ago, you wonder... "what will I say!"
And then you end up talking about your favorite books, other people, things you like at the Con... and it's all very casual. I think overall everyone tends to over think things and situations. In the end, we're all just regular people who want to talk about normal stuff.

[...] Justine Larbalestier wrote an interesting post today on Lunch, darlingHere’s a quick excerpt A friend will be in town next week to meet her agent and some editors who are interested in her writing. She is very nervous and asked me what to expect. I directed her to agent Kristin Nelson’s blog where a while back she gave the lowdown on the shennanigans that take place at agent-editor lunches. It’s shocking stuff! They eat food and gossip! Who’d’ve thunk it? I then revealed to my friend that the exact same thing happens at editor-author lunches. Food is et and (rarely) wine is drunk, a [...]
