Fingernails being bitten . . .
168 runs off 36 overs. Can we do it? Oh, yes, we can!

jonathan Says:
now this is cricket!
December 5th, 2006 at 4:51 pm
jonathan Says:
if punter and hayden stay there for ten overs, this game’s done. and if australia go two nil up, i think the summer’s over.
December 5th, 2006 at 4:56 pm
jonathan Says:
ack!! 2 down!
December 5th, 2006 at 5:04 pm
4. Justine Says:
Steady. Lots of power to come. They’re still bleeding to death.
December 5th, 2006 at 5:10 pm
5. Justine Says:
And the summer is not over if we win. Please!
December 5th, 2006 at 5:12 pm
jonathan Says:
i know. you may hate punter as captain, but he’s a great bat. i don’t think we can lose this from here, but can we win it? i think we can. i think we will. but cricket is a funny game…
December 5th, 2006 at 5:13 pm
jonathan Says:
you think england could come back from two down to get the ashes?
December 5th, 2006 at 5:14 pm
8. Justine Says:
Nope. I don’t think England can come back, but that doesn’t mean they won’t and doesn’t mean there won’t still be heaps of entertaining cricket if we win this. Which I’m very optimistic that we will.
Oh, I don’t have a bad word to say about Ponting as a batter. He’s awesome.
December 5th, 2006 at 5:17 pm
jonathan Says:
i’m hoping they’ll be smart enough to take this slow and easy. they have the right men at the wicket. and, i think there’ll be great cricket this summer. england have, happily, shown they can play in this game. and australia have shown they’re still the best in the world. when i say the summer’ll be over, i mean we’ll be headed towards a whitewash. i don’t think england are mentally tough enough to come back from two down.
December 5th, 2006 at 5:20 pm
Lee Battersby Says:
Aaggh, this is dying the slow death. Ponting and Hussey *should* see them through, but boys! Score some runs!
December 5th, 2006 at 5:23 pm
11. Justine Says:
Gilly’s padded up to come in next. Wise move, I reckon. I liked Ponting sending in Hussey early and all. Slightly adventurous captaincy. Woo hoo!
Also what you just said. Except that whitewashes of England make me very very very very happy.
December 5th, 2006 at 5:24 pm
12. Justine Says:
Premature panic much, Mr Battersby? They’re doing just fine.
December 5th, 2006 at 5:27 pm
jonathan Says:
it is nailbiting, which is great!
December 5th, 2006 at 5:29 pm
14. Justine Says:
Yes, long nails are revolting. Best be rid of ‘em.
December 5th, 2006 at 5:30 pm
niki Says:
wow this is somewhat frustrating – reading text on the internet doesn’t quite do it…USA sux – how can they not televise the cricket
December 5th, 2006 at 5:34 pm
Lee Battersby Says:
Panic is all part of the fun
I would have loved to have seen Gilly and hayden open. Send a message of “Send them back, Freddy”.
This is how it should be though, isn’t it?
December 5th, 2006 at 5:34 pm
Lee Battersby Says:
2 for 58, 12 overs down.
December 5th, 2006 at 5:35 pm
18. Justine Says:
We is well ahead of the required run rate.
Yeah the US of A is hell for following the cricket. So good to be home!
And speaking of dodgy captaincy: England aren’t exactly setting the most attacking fields in the world. I guess he doesn’t trust his fielders enough . . .
December 5th, 2006 at 5:37 pm
19. Justine Says:
I’d've loved him to send in Hayden and Gilly . . .
That last over was lovely for us!
December 5th, 2006 at 5:39 pm
Lee Battersby Says:
Doesn’t trust his bowlers, I’d say. if he’s playing for a draw he needs to bowl himself and Hoggard to the death and tell harmison he needs to leave the field to get an injury treated so a fielder who deoesn’t resemble a battleship can replace him.
of course, as soon as I say that, Ponting swats a 4 off Hoggard…
December 5th, 2006 at 5:40 pm
Lee Battersby Says:
10 runs from the over!
December 5th, 2006 at 5:41 pm
22. Justine Says:
Did I not tell you?
They need another two strike bowlers. Just Hoggard’s not enough. Maybe they’ll come to their senses and pick Monty Panesar for the next test?
December 5th, 2006 at 5:44 pm
lee battersby Says:
damn, damn, bugger and blast. I have to leave now, and I’m going out to my stepson’s graduation tonight so I’m going to miss the rest of this!
I don’t think I have ever, before, wanted to *stay* at work. Bloody car trip with no radio, bloody kids….
have a ball. Let me know the result?
December 5th, 2006 at 5:47 pm
24. Justine Says:
That’ll learn you to breed, or, you know, not live in Perth . . .
Have fun!
December 5th, 2006 at 5:49 pm
jonathan Says:
classic test cricket! we’re in the last session of the last day, and the game is still exciting viewing.
December 5th, 2006 at 6:03 pm
26. Justine Says:
Even moreso if you’re Australian. Do you read the Guardian’s over by over? They are not happy campers. But they’re dead amusing about it. I guess the English have had a lot of practice at that.
December 5th, 2006 at 6:05 pm
jonathan Says:
i do. losing punter’s a bit of a blow. would have been nice if he’d made 50. niki, i think you can get coverage on the internet. i know cheryl morgan bought it somewhere.
December 5th, 2006 at 6:23 pm
28. Justine Says:
I tried the internet tellie coverage and was underwhelmed.
And now Martyn’s gone.
I’m still not worried, but. We’ve got hardly any runs to get and many balls to get ‘em off.
December 5th, 2006 at 6:27 pm
jonathan Says:
i’m not seriously worried either, honestly. marto may have blown his career with that shot, though. he and hayden will be under a lot of pressure to keep their spots. i’ll worry when pup, gilly, and huss are back in the pavilion.
December 5th, 2006 at 6:47 pm
30. Justine Says:
Even then I wouldn’t panic. McGrath’s come a long way with his batting.
At the moment I don’t think Hayden or Martyn deserve their places. Especially as there are lots of promising NSW batters to replace ‘em.
December 5th, 2006 at 6:49 pm
jonathan Says:
heh heh. nsw batters, huh? there are others. i also think they’ll struggle to retain ooh ah and clarke in the same bowling line-up. changes have to come. it is great that pup seems to have found his feet again, though.
December 5th, 2006 at 7:06 pm
jonathan Says:
so, does this english team have the *mental* toughness to win a test in australia?
December 5th, 2006 at 7:09 pm
niki Says:
NAR THEY’RE GONERS
December 5th, 2006 at 7:10 pm
niki Says:
GIVE US TWO 4S SO I CAN GO TO BED
December 5th, 2006 at 7:12 pm
jonathan Says:
that’s it. off to bed. they did it. wonderful!
December 5th, 2006 at 7:15 pm
niki Says:
YEAH I CAN GO TO BED
December 5th, 2006 at 7:16 pm
niki Says:
stupid english – why didn’t they go for the draw ?
December 5th, 2006 at 7:17 pm
